S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope

Developer GSC Game World has seemingly been working on a new update for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. While the studio hasn’t revealed any details about this update, it looks like it will go live across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S soon. As caught by Reddit user Zelenobot, a social media post about the update was made by PlayStation Asia celebrating its supposed release. The since-deleted post also includes an image providing hints about some of the improvements in the update.

Dubbed “The Zone Lookout”, the update will seemingly push S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl to version 2.1. Among the reported improvements are an increase in the visualization for A-Life NPCs, adjustments across combat and weapon ballistics, and the ability to fast travel around the map with squad leaders. Along with this, the studio has also seemingly worked on a number of bug fixes and other improvements.

The fast travel system is especially noteworthy, with fans speculating that it might be similar to the system that was featured in 2009’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. It essentially allowed players to walk up to NPC squad leaders and simply ask them to take the player somewhere. The system was praised at the time, since it still maintained the immersion of being in the zone while also making the act of traveling less tedious. Unlike other fast-travel systems, it would also still require a player to find a friendly squad to begin with, so they can’t simply fast travel to get out of dangerous situations.

Doubling down on the immersion, the system in Call of Pripyat allowed players the choice between paying the squad leaders to fast travel to specific places, or simply accompanying the squad to instantly get to where they were headed for free.

As for improvements to A-Life, it will essentially allow NPCs to spot players and each other from further away, kicking in the shooter’s well-praised simulation systems without needing the player to get close. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that this might come with some associated performance costs.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was released on PC and Xbox Series X/S in November 2024 before making its way to the PS5 in the following year. More recently, GSC Game World released a massive update for the title, bringing it up to version 2.0. This update brought in some massive changes to the game across just about every one of its aspects, from visual fidelity and lighting systems to enemy and weapon variety, and even A-Life improvements. For more details, check out our coverage of the update.

The update was accompanied by the release of the game’s Cost of Hope expansion, which brought in quite a bit of new content for the game that includes several surprises for fans of the franchise along with new weapons, enemies, and even artifacts. In our review, we gave the Cost of Hope expansion a score of 8 out of 10 thanks to its twist on the classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. zones, an interesting story, and the revamped fog system.
