Like most modern games, Saints Row has a leveling system. Completing activities and missions grants XP. Leveling up grants new skills, and given that many things are locked behind them – like increased Health and Flow – it’s worth garnering XP quickly.

The main missions provide plenty of XP, so those wanting to see how the story plays out will receive a hefty chunk. However, there are numerous other sources for maximizing those gains. Firstly, take the opportunity to drive as recklessly as possible in the open world. Near-misses with other vehicles, driving on the wrong side of the road and stunts all provide some XP ala Forza Horizon. Though not especially substantial, they do add up over time.

Another avenue of XP to explore is Side Hustles. One of the most straightforward involves rating a local business poorly with @tcha. This starts a wave-based challenge where you must slay hordes of enemies. The lower the rating, the harder the challenge and the more lucrative the rewards. Those keen on other things can also partake in Riding Shotgun where an NPC drives around while you provide covering fire, usually on the vehicle’s roof.

You can also pursue bounties via the Wanted app on your phone, investigating Crimes of Opportunity (that also provides some cash from the gang members killed), and Challenges (which can also net some new Perks). Discoveries involve finding Golden Dumpsters, which also provide some cash and cosmetics, and Hidden Histories, where you listen to the lore behind different locales. If you’re looking for a break from all of the violence, then Discoveries serve as a decent diversion.

While main missions and Side Hustles provide the most XP, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Santo Ileso, and you won’t have to worry about grinding. So pick your poison and enjoy.

Saints Row is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. You can read our official review here. First-time players can check out other tips and tricks (like how to tackle each faction) here.
