One thing stuck with everyone since the reveal trailer for NeoBards’ Silent Hill f is the monster design. Created by artist kera, they look absolutely hideous, but thankfully, protagonist Hinako won’t spend the whole game running away. The latest trailer showcased melee combat, with the trusted rusty pipe and even a Naginata coming into play.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, series producer Motoi Okamoto revealed that combat will have “a heavier focus on melee and be more action-oriented compared to last year’s Silent Hill 2.” There will also be encounters “as challenging as the obstacles that Hinako must overcome in life.”

Okamoto also discussed the art direction, namely the “juxtaposition between beauty and terror” in the monsters. “There is the terrible beauty of the game’s monster design – created by the artist kera that marries Japanese horror with the uniqueness of Silent Hill’s previous, terrifying creations.” As for the soundtrack, series veteran Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (of Dynasty Warriors fame) offer a score that “evokes the past but is entirely fitting with this new setting.”

Finally, you can look forward to puzzles, which are “grounded in psychological anguish and suffering” and deeply connected to the story by scriptwriter Ryukishi07.” They also incorporate Japanese culture, like scarecrows, hence the field of scarecrow-esque teens that Hinako must traverse.

Silent Hill f launches on September 25th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, retailing for $69.99. The Deluxe Edition costs $79.99, offering three days of early access and a Robbie the Rabbit outfit for Hinako.
