While Silent Hill f might still not be fully out yet aside from the advanced access given by the Deluxe Edition, reviews have already come out, and the horror title has been quite positively received. In a recent social media post, series producer Motoi Okamoto is celebrating the positive reviews for the game and its overall Metacritic rating of 86, which also ties it with reviews for the Bloober Team-developed Silent Hill 2 remake.

In his post, Okamoto wrote about how the decision to have Higurashi When They Cry creator Ryukishi07 handle the narrative in Silent Hill f, as well as going with more combat-oriented game design was the right call. He did note, however, that these decisions had the potential to divide opinions on the horror title. He also mentioned that, while combat may have been divisive, the story got near-universal praise.

“I’m thrilled that [Silent Hill f] received a Metascore of 86, tying with the Silent Hill 2 remake,” wrote Okamoto on X (translated via Grok). “With Japan as the setting, Mr. Ryukishi07 handling the scenario, and a combat-focused game design, I had a feeling it might divide opinions given all the challenging elements, but I’m truly grateful for such high praise.”

“Even amid the mixed reception, the story has been almost universally acclaimed by all media outlets, so entrusting it to Mr. Ryukishi07 was absolutely the right call. I think this is a work that fans of Mr. Ryukishi07, as well as Silent Hill fans, can both enjoy and recommend.”

While Deluxe Edition owners can can already play Silent Hill f, the rest of us will have to wait until later this week—September 25 to be precise—to get our hands on the title on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Over the weekend, Silent Hill f got a launch trailer that gave us a solid look at what kind of horror we can expect from the latest entry in the celebrated franchise. The story in the newest title revolves around school girl Hinako, who lives in the fishing town of Ebisugaoka in the 1960s. As is highlighted in the trailer, there are issues between Hinako and her parents, and she eventually finds herself having to fight for survival as the town gets enveloped in a strange fog.

Earlier reviews for Silent Hill f had indicated that the runtime for the horror title is around 12 to 13 hours, with Konami also having previously confirmed that there are multiple endings for players to unlock, as well as content that can only be checked out through New Game Plus.

While combat might have been a focus for the latest entry in the Silent Hill franchise, Okamoto had previously spoken about how the title was not designed to be a soulslike. The producer instead drew comparisons to the combat systems in other titles in the franchise, like Silent Hill 3 and 4.
