The PlayStation 5 has shipped 32.1 million units in its lifetime as of December 31st, 2022. In its recent consolidated financial results, Sony confirmed that it shipped 7.1 million units for the previous quarter. However, according to sources for Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the third quarter of the fiscal year 2024 will be even bigger.
Sony is reportedly aiming to sell 10.5 million from October 1st to December 31st, 2023. August 2023 will be its slowest month, with 1.5 million sold, while November should have 4.8 million in sales. In total, the company is forecasting 30.5 million sales in the fiscal year, as per a previous report by Insider Gaming.
The sales numbers will reportedly be due to the rumored new PS5 model, which features a detachable disc drive. Production is kicking off in April, and it will allegedly be available to purchase in September. Interestingly, Sony is seemingly forecasting the new model to sell 18.5 million units in the fiscal year 2024, while the current model sells about 12 million before production stops.
As Henderson notes, internal forecasts are subject to change due to how the market works. Time will tell if these targets are reached, so stay tuned.
