In the wake of Ubisoft+ coming to Xbox, VGC’s Jordan Middler recently reported that Square Enix was “firmly in Sony’s camp, even beyond what’s publicly known.” This should come as no surprise – two of its biggest games, Final Fantasy 16 and Forspoken are exclusive to the PS5 (the latter for two whole years after release). However, Middler recently revealed on ResetEra that the publisher has another PS5 title that it wasn’t showcasing just yet.
This is due to the fact that Final Fantasy 16 hasn’t been showcased yet “and was supposed to by this point.” He further added that it’s not Kingdom Hearts or another Final Fantasy game but something that “would potentially divert focus from Final Fantasy 16, which is the main focus right now.” And no, it’s not Dragon Quest either, though there are several projects like Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate that have already been revealed).
Regarding exclusivity, Middler said that Square Enix is focused on “Console exclusivity, PC isn’t in the same conversation, you can see how their PC ports are doing.” True enough, one only need look at the initially problematic release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on PC.
Final Fantasy 16 was originally slated to receive some new information last year but faced a near half-year delay in development. New details will be coming this Spring but plans could always change. As for Square Enix’s unknown PS5 title, one can only speculate what it could be so take things with a grain of salt and stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
