Starfield Will Have What You Expect, And Then Some More, Says Todd Howard

Bethesda's Todd Howard says Starfied will be familiar and new to fans of the developer at the same time.

Starfield

After having become a permanent resident of the rumour mill, Starfield was finally confirmed by Bethesda at their recent E3 press conference. The catch? It was revealed with little more than a short concept trailer and a title card, all of which revealed absolutely none of what we pretty much already didn’t know- that it’s a space-faring sci-fi RPG called Starfield. However, while current gen systems have not been ruled out for Starfield, it’s most likely scheduled for a next-gen launch, so we’re gonna have to wait a pretty long time before we hear more about the game.

However, we can make some assumptions about what kind of a game it’s going to be. There’s a formula that Bethesda Game Studios follow pretty strictly with its games from the Fallout and Elder Scrolls universes, and we can expect that to be present in Starfield as well, but according to Todd Howard, we can expect a little bit more, too. While the game will be a sci-fi RPG with the same formula as what you’ve come to expect from a Bethesda Game Studios title, it’ll be attempting new things as well.

“It has what you expect and more, I would say that,” Howard said while speaking to GameSpot post-E3. “We have a team that’s worked together for a very long time, done some very big games, done different kinds of systems. Some of those we can rely on, and then we can push further. We have a lot of experience in the studio. So we can be very, very ambitious, and try some new things, and there’s a level of confidence that we’ll be able to execute them.”

Just what these new additions on top of the Bethesda Game Studios formula will be isn’t something we’re gonna find out about any time soon, though. Starfield’s a long way away, and though there’s a chance that it could be a cross-generation game, it seems highly unlikely that that will indeed be the case.
