If you ever needed evidence of the popularity of Steam, then independent analysis Sergey Galyonkin, who owns Steam Spy, may have it. According to his data (via Medium), Steam managed to generate roughly $3 billion in game sales throughout 2015 though Galyonkin admits his estimates may be slightly off.
To further add to this, the top 20 best selling titles averaged more than $650 million in sales. Grand Theft Auto 5 leads the pack with 3.8 million units sold and $160 million in sales while Fallout 4 is second with 2.7 million units sold and $122.5 million in sales.
Galyonkin uses a web API which looks at the revenue generated from each game’s lowest advertised price across the +3000 games that released last year. This means that if you take into account the high sales numbers when these games launched then final estimates may actually be higher.
Regardless, it’s a testament to Steam’s dominance as a digital distribution platform. What are your thoughts on the same? Let us know in the comments.
