Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin may not have pulled up any trees with its critical and commercial performance, but there’s a decent contingent of people who enjoyed the Soulslike action RPG spinoff for what it was. Square Enix has now released its third and final DLC, Different Future, but what’s next for the game? Could a sequel possibly be on the cards?

It’s not completely out of the question. As reported by Noisy Pixel, during a recent livestream commemorating the aforementioned DLC’s launch, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin producer Tetsuya Nomura thanked fans for their support of the game, remarking that many are even hoping for a sequel. And could a sequel actually happen? According to Nomura, if there is enough support and demand from fans, Square Enix may very well end up greenlighting one.

“When Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin first came out, there was a lot of negative bashing, especially online,” Nomura said. “However, I’m pleased to say that everyone watching this livestream has grown very fond of Jack and his friends. So much so that some would love to see a sequel of [the title].

“And if you do want that to happen, then it would certainly help if one person watching this spread the news to 10 other people. If word of mouth about the game spreads through the DLC’s completion, proving that this is a title that has really resonated with everyone, there may be a time when we can meet again. I personally would love to work with Kumabe-san from Koei Tecmo again.”

Whether or not Stranger of Paradise does manage to see the sort of sustained sales over the coming period that Square Enix might be hoping for remains to be seen, but a hypothetical sequel is certainly an intriguing prospect. The action RPG has plenty of room for improvement, yes, but where its combat and progression mechanics are concerned, there’s quite a bit to like and build on in future projects as well. Of course, for now there’s no concrete word on whether that will actually happen, so we’re just going to have to wait and watch.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
