The acclaimed open-world action RPG also ranked as the best-selling title on Xbox and third best-selling on PlayStation for March.

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 has emerged as the top-selling premium game in the United States for March 2024, per Circana analyst and executive director Matt Piscatella. It’s the third best-selling game of the year to date, with dollar sales surpassing the combined lifetime figures for Dragon’s Dogma and its expansion, Dark Arisen.

While it was the sixth most-played title on Steam last month in the US, it ranked first in dollar sales for Xbox platforms (followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in second) and third for PlayStation platforms (with Rise of the Ronin coming in fourth). In terms of sales figures, Capcom announced it had sold over 2.5 million units within the first 12 days.

Stay tuned for updated sales numbers in the coming months. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Check out our review – we awarded it a 10 out of 10 due to its standout combat, immersive sandbox and world design.

A 10th anniversary celebration livestream for the original Dragon's Dogma is set to broadcast in a couple of hours.

There were many who thought that Capcom would end up announcing Dragon’s Dogma 2 at its recent showcase, but it just wasn’t to be- though many still haven’t give up hope. A celebration livestream for the 10th anniversary of the original Dragon’s Dogma was announced at the event and is scheduled for less than a couple of hours from now, and the hope for quite a few fans is that that is where the sequel will be announced.

And some recent updates made to the official Dragon’s Dogma website might be pointing to just that. As recently spotted by a Reddit user, new pre-order URLs were spotted on the website, and considering the fact that there’s nothing related to Dragon’s Dogma that’s currently officially confirmed to be releasing in the future and is, as such, up for pre-order, it does raise an eyebrow.

Pre-order links were also spotted in the about section of the game’s official YouTube channel. Previously, the channel linked to a purchase page for Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. All of these links have been taken down by now, but there’s at least some likelihood that Capcom has something cooking up that it may have accidentally spilled the beans on early.

A sequel to Dragon’s Dogma has been in demand for years, and has also been in in the rumour mill for some time, having been mentioned in both, Capcom’s ransomware leak in 2020 and the GeForce Now leak last year. In May last year, it was also claimed by a leaker that the RPG sequel was being built on the RE Engine, much like most Capcom releases now.

Interestingly, Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno said back in 2019 that he would love to make a Dragon’s Dogma 2, and that he already had quite a few ideas for a sequel.

A 10th anniversary celebration event has been slated for June 16th, and will be available via YouTube at 3:00 PM PDT or 11:00 PM BST.

Capcom recently held its summer games showcase, wherein the Japanese publishing giant has teased Dragon’s Dogma‘s upcoming 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Capcom will be hosting a celebration event titled “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma“.

The digital event will air on June 16 at 3:00 PM PDT (or 11:00 PM BST), and interested fans will be able to watch the video through Capcom and Dragon’s Dogma‘s official YouTube channels, as revealed in a recent tweet by the publisher. The original game’s director Hideaki Itsuno has also stated that the celebration video will reveal more about the development of the original game.

Of course, fans are still hopeful regarding a sequel to this classic open world RPG. We have heard many rumours over the past couple of years surrounding how a sequel might be in development, although nothing has come to fruition up until now. It’s possible that might change with this upcoming celebration video, but without any official confirmation, fans should keep expectations in check for now.

After Hideaki Itsuno retweeted the showcase announcement, DasVergeben said, "Dragon's Dogma fans are in for a treat today. I hope you're excited 2 see it."

The Capcom Showcase is taking place today at 3 PM PDT and features titles like Resident Evil 4 remake and Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. While the focus is on previously announced titles, the company has promised an “announcement or two.” One of those could be Dragon’s Dogma 2.

In a Reddit thread about director Hideaki Itsuno retweeting the showcase announcement, leaker DasVergeben said, “Dragon’s Dogma fans are in for a treat today. I hope you’re excited 2 see it.” The “2” is the most conspicuous part, subtly hinting at the announcement of Dragon’s Dogma 2. This wouldn’t be the first time the game has been rumored – leaker AestheticGamer said in May 2021 that it was “100 percent” using RE Engine.

DasVergeben is worth taking seriously since they revealed details on Street Fighter 6’s characters and design changes way before the official gameplay reveal (and concept art leak). Dragon’s Dogma first released in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360 before coming to PC in 2016. Is the sequel real and could it potentially release this year? Time will tell so stay tuned for the Capcom Showcase for more details.

Dragon's Dogma 2 has been in the rumour mill for nearly a couple of years, and Hideaki Itsuno's Twitter activity might suggest an announcement could be coming soon.

Capcom recently announced its debut Capcom Showcase, and has set a June 13 date for the nearly-35 minute-long event. Speculation as to what the showcase could feature has been running rampant, as one might expect, and the one game that seems to come up more often than most in those talks is Dragon’s Dogma 2- and there’s a chance that it does indeed end up getting announced.

Why is that? Because a tweet by Capcom Dev 1’s official Twitter account asking fans to tune in to the show was recently retweeted by Hideaki Itsuno, director of the likes of Devil May Cry 4 and 5 and, most importantly in this context, Dragon’s Dogma.

It’s worth mentioning that Capcom has said that the showcase is going to focus on games that have been previously announced, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 is obviously not in that group. Then again, as pointed out by @ShadowRockX on Twitter, in the Capcom Creators Discord server, the company did say the show will also feature “an announcement or two”.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been in the rumour mill for nearly a couple of years at this point, and has been mentioned in major leaks, from Capcom’s ransomware leak in 2020 to last year’s GeForce Now blowout. Rumours have suggested that the action RPG sequel, much like most other Capcom titles, is being built on the RE Engine.

Itsuno himself said as far back as March 2019, before Devil May Cry 5’s launch, that he would love to work on a Dragon’s Dogma sequel, and that he already had plenty of ideas for such a game. In early 2021, he confirmed that work on his next project, which he obviously did not name, was underway, and earlier this year, provided a brief development update on it.

Recently, Capcom also launched a 10th anniversary celebration website for the original Dragon’s Dogma.

Capcom's Hideaki Itsuno is reportedly working on a sequel to the 2012 action RPG as per various leaks and rumors through the years.

Following the New Year and various messages of celebration from the industry, Capcom designer and director Hideaki Itsuno also tweeted his greetings. However, he further added that the “next project is definitely ahead of last year” and asked everyone to “Please look forward to it.”

While not much is officially known about Itsuno’s next project (his last was Devil May Cry 5), rumors and leaks have pointed to it being Dragon’s Dogma 2. A sequel was mentioned in the infamous Capcom leak from 2020 and insider AestheticGamer (known for his reliable leaks on Resident Evil Village) later reported that it would “100 percent” be developed on RE Engine. As such, Itsuno noted in December 2020 that the “new project” was still a “long way off” so it remains to be seen how far development has progressed compared to last year.

Dragon’s Dogma is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Switch. You can check out our review for the game and its expansion Dark Arisen here.

Happy new year 2022! The next project is definitely ahead of last year. Please look forward to it.

Capcom could bring their latest action title to Nintendo's hybrid platform.

We’ve been hearing a lot about the possibility (or the desire, at the very least) of seeing Devil May Cry on the Switch– whether that’s ports of older games, or people wanting to see Dante make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. What about the recently released Devil May Cry 5 though? We know by now that it’s a stellar action title, but could it ever come to the Switch as well?

It just might. Speaking with German magazine M! (via Reddit), the game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno said that Devil May Cry 5 might end up getting ported to the Switch if the upcoming Switch version of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sells enough to justify such a decision on Capcom’s part. “If Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sells well on Switch, then we might consider porting DMC 5,” he said.

In fact, apparently, one of the reasons that Devil May Cry 5 isn’t on the Switch to begin with is because when development of the game began, Capcom didn’t have access to development kits for the system, and as such, they chose to focus on the platforms that the game would go on to release on. “We started the development of DMC 5, while we didn’t have the dev-kits [for] the Switch,” said Itsuno. “Because of that we concentrated on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC version.”

On the other hand, if more Dragon’s Dogma is what you might want to see, there might be hope for that as well. Not too long ago, Itsuno spoke about wanting to work on a sequel for the game as well- read more on that through here.

"If I could, I'd love to make Dragon's Dogma 2," says Hideaki Itsuno.

All eyes are on Capcom as they gear up for the looming launch of Devil May Cry 5, but while the game is clearly director Hideaki Itsuno’s passion project, there’s other stuff that he wants to do as well. Example? Dragon’s Dogma 2. Itsuno has recently spoken about how he had the choice between making that, or a Devil May Cry sequel, and though he ultimately went with the latter, the former is still something he wants to make.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Itsuno got to talking about Dragon’s Dogma, mentioning at first how that project in particular has been his biggest challenge at Capcom to date. “That was a brand new series – a lot of other stuff I’d done was already established,” he said. “It was one of the first real new things. And back then it still wasn’t quite so common for Capcom to do a simultaneous worldwide release, plus we were doing all this new stuff with the pawn system.”

With that in mind, Dragon’s Dogma is a series Itsuno would like to return to at some point in the future. “I’ve mentioned this before, but when we started Devil May Cry 5, I’d gone to the people up top and said let me make either Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2,” he said. “I thought Devil May Cry 5 would be the better choice right now, so did that. If I could, I’d love to make Dragon’s Dogma 2 – it’d be awesome.”

Dragon’s Dogma fans do have some things to look forward to for now- the game’s Nintendo Switch port releases worldwide on April 23. Devil May Cry 5, meanwhile, is merely days away from launch, and will be releasing on March 8 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Dragon's Dogma was his biggest success, but DMC5 took the most effort, says Hideaki Itsuno.

The second demo for Capcom’s Devil May Cry 5 is now available for Xbox One and PS4 (sorry, PC users), providing a chance to experience the game’s stylish combat and visuals. While director Hideaki Itsuno is working on the sequel because it’s what fans really wanted, many are also curious about the fate of Dragon’s Dogma. The open world action RPG was fairly successful back in the day, and had been recently ported to PC, Xbox One, and PS4 (also coming to the Nintendo Switch).

Speaking to VG247 in a Devil May Cry 5 media tour via a translator, Itsuno explained how he came to develop one over the other. “So, when the discussion came up for Devil May Cry 5, I went to Kenzo [Kenzo Tsujimoto, Capcom founder] and I said… look, I want to make either Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2 next. He said ‘okay, do whatever you want. Do whichever one you want.’ So I thought, alright, y’know what… let’s do DMC5. So we did that.”

Though that doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing a Dragon’s Dogma sequel any time soon, never say never. Itsuno noted, “Here we are – we’re now finishing up DMC5. But I had ideas for Dragon’s Dogma 2 at the time as well. So here we are, it’s the end of this project.” This particular point was accentuated with a grin.

“I’ve always got maybe around four different titles in mind, maybe about four different ideas that I’d love to make,” Itsuno said. “But there’s a difference between the titles that I’d love to make and the titles that I think I should make next. But here we are, we’re here, and… I’m already gearing up for my next project. We can’t say what it is, but we’re looking forward to getting to work on it.”

When told that many outlets have been wondering about a potential Dragon’s Dogma 2, Itsuno responded, “Whenever I make a game, I make specifically what I want to play, what I’ve always wanted to play. Dragon’s Dogma is one of those things where ever since I was a kid this is the kind of experience I wanted from a game. I think about that and then I work towards creating that experience.”

Interestingly, it was Devil May Cry 5 that was harder to make. “The one that was kind of the biggest success in my mind, the one I’m most proud of – that’s probably Dragon’s Dogma. The one that was the hardest to work on, that took the most effort – that’s this one. That’s DMC5.”

Devil May Cry 5 is out on March 8th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It’s the first sequel in the main franchise since Devil May Cry 4 released in 2008. A reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry, was released in 2013, but it functions as a wholly different story altogether. Regardless of whether Dragon’s Dogma 2 happens or not, many fans are probably more thankful that an Itsuno-developed Devil May Cry 5 is nearly here.

It all makes sense (eventually) but only if you play role-playing titles. Trust us.

For all the idiosyncrasies, cliches and bizarre happenings they contain, role-playing games are probably my favourite genre in gaming. There’s just so much to them, so many systems working together in unison to provide an immersive narrative experience. Of course, not everything makes sense to the average non-RPG fan. So let’s a look at 15 things that only an RPG fan could understand and why.

Min-Maxing

Pop quiz, hotshot. What do fans of Diablo and action RPG/looters all have in common, besides laughing at Diablo Immortal? Min-maxing. Every time we start a new character or new League or season rolls around, min-maxing is the priority. It essentially means pouring all resources and prioritizing a single stat for the sake of a desired play style. So if you’re maining Shadow Impale Demon Hunter in Diablo 3, for instance, you’re maxing out Life on Hit, Attack Speed, Movement Speed and keep pouring points into Dexterity. Does it make sense to prioritize only one stat in real life? No, but in an action RPG looter, it’s everything.
