Valve has announced that Team Fortress 2 will receive a free update that will gamers with the Oculus Rift VR headset to play it in virtual reality mode, thus becoming the first game to support the device.
Valve programmer Joe Ludwig stated, “When we first played an early version of Virtual Reality mode in Team Fortress we were blown away by the immersion we experienced. VR is just getting started, but it is going to have a big impact on gaming. This update will let us share that experience with more of the Team Fortress community.”
Speaking to Engadget, Ludwig states that the choice of TF2 was “obvious” since the “community is large and healthy” and “we use it as a place where we run experiments”.
As for Oculus Rift on other titles, Ludwig says that while “there’s certainly interest internally in moving other Valve titles,” they’ve only “just sort of experimented with head tracking a little bit.”
