Rage
While the setting and atmosphere of Rage was often so depressing that it formed a lump in my throat, the NPCs that we met throughout the game were downright hilarious, and relieved the game of all its tension. They all were full of character, and each had a distinct personality, and each was funny in their own way. Some of them talked funny, some had weird catchphrases, some were more dirty-minded than we’d imagine and some just cracked the best jokes, if not always intentionally. No matter whoever the NPC was or how significant or insignificant he/she was to the story, they all added a great deal to the experience.
Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen
Pokemon games are never supposed to have good writing, but FireRed and LeafGreen or Red and Blue had some of the best NPCs. While some might call it poor writing and translation, I call it just pure quirkiness. A guy talking about shorts and how comfortable they are and suddenly wanting to battle you? Another guy who’s sleeping in the middle of a road? A person who thinks we’re looking at his girlfriend and challenges us to a battle, and that same girlfriend wishing if her boyfriend was “as good” as us? And who can forget the sexual innuendos in the game, intentional or not, when women in houses asked us to sleep and rest in their beds and not to be shy?
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout 3 reached all new highs in terms of NPC quirkiness, but Fallout: New Vegas managed to outdo even that. Quotes like “I’m gonna find Gloria Van Graff and make that bitch eat her hair” and “I’m all for risking my life, but I’m a little sensitive about my butthole” just cracked me up, and characters like Boxcars and Little Buster brought the game to life. It had poor writing in parts, and some NPCs seemed like they were trying to be funny but failing hard at it, but overall, Fallout: New Vegas was a very funny game.
