Not that long ago, it would have seemed impossible that a Shin Megami Tensei game would ever show up on a list such as this one, what with previous games in the series having been singularly focused on dungeon crawling, to the exclusion of almost everything else. SMT5, however, is the most ambitious this series has ever been. Its post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo is surprisingly large, and exploring its world and engaging with the game’s delightfully tight traversal mechanics remains an immensely rewarding experience from beginning to end.
