While FromSoftware’s upcoming title, The Duskbloods, has garnered quite a bit of attention in no small part thanks to its similar visual style to fan-favorite game Bloodborne as well as the presence of the word “blood” in the title, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that there is no relation between the two games. In an interview with Inven Global, Miyazaki was asked about any potential connections between the two games.
Along with denying any connection, Miyazaki also jokingly spoke about regretting even putting the word “blood” in the title of The Duskbloods.
“I expected this question, but it is a game with no connection whatsoever to Bloodborne. In fact, because we’ve received this question so often, I almost regret putting the word ‘Blood’ in the title (laughs). There are merely similar terms and concepts; the themes are quite different.”
He went on to note that, while the upcoming closed network test for The Duskbloods might also hint at a connection between it and Bloodborne, the full game will prove to be quite different. This is due to the fact that the network test won’t really have much of the in-game lore revealed to players, which might lead some to think they are finding connections to Bloodborne where there aren’t any.
“In this network test, not much of the world’s lore is revealed, so it might be difficult to feel the differences. However, in the commercial release (the official launch version), much more of the world lore will be uncovered, and I think by then people will realize the two games are completely different.”
The fact that the subject of Bloodborne keeps coming up shouldn’t really come as a surprise, since FromSoftware and even Sony have been quiet on the matter. The fact that the critically acclaimed title continues to be stuck on PS4 and is unable to benefit from the improved hardware of the current console generation has also been a sticking point for many.
Even former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has spoken about it, expressing hope that it might make its way to PC or PS5 at some point. “This game [Bloodborne] has a lot of fans all over the world, and it still doesn’t have a PS5 version,” Yoshida said. “PlayStation’s first-party team is releasing a ton of remasters, so why don’t they release this one? There’s no PC release. I am often asked why these haven’t been released, but it’s a complete mystery. Maybe they’ll come out in the future. Maybe they won’t. Maybe they’ll make a special edition. Maybe they won’t. As a huge fan, I hope it will come out.”
In the meantime, The Duskbloods is a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive title that will feature PvPvE gameplay that is rather unique for FromSoftware – a studio largely known for its single-player outings. While this might disappoint some fans of the studio, especially since Elden Ring Nightreign was also multiplayer-centric, Miyazaki has said that single-player games will continue to be important for FromSoftware.
The Duskbloods doesn’t yet have a release date. For more, take a look at the trailer from back in June.
