"Believe me, that’s something that is top of mind for us, but we also want to put on a great show that celebrates these games."

The Game Awards 2022

With The Game Awards right around the corner, security concerns arise again, especially after last year’s incident. Creator and host Geoff Keighley addressed the same in a recent Twitch stream and confirmed increased security to prevent another such occurrence.

“Yeah, we are. We don’t want to talk about that stuff too publicly, just because it’s security,” said Keighley (transcription via VGC). “We definitely have plans, and we’re trying to do all we can to keep me safe, but also everyone watching the show, the audience, people participating in the show and everything. It’s certainly something we’re thinking about. We appreciate the concern.

“Believe me, that’s something that is top of mind for us, but we also want to put on a great show that celebrates these games, and celebrates our love of video games, so that’s an important thing to keep in mind as well. But yeah, I appreciate the concern around that.”

Last year, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s acceptance speech for Game of the Year was followed by an unknown individual taking the mic. Another incident occurred at Gamescom Opening Night Live when a different individual approached Keighley, asking about Grand Theft Auto 6, before being removed. There was no harm in either case, but security concerns remained a concern.

The Game Awards takes place on December 7th at 4:30 PM PT. Alan Wake 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 are leading in nominations, though Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Resident Evil 4, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are also heavy favorites.

As for announcements, Death Stranding 2 could receive a new trailer; Warframe will get a new look its upcoming Whispers in The Walls update; and Inscryption developer Daniel Mullins may announce his next game. Larian will also reveal the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series X/S, which will be sometime in December.
