The Last of Us Part 1

NOTE: There are major spoilers ahead for the beginning of The Last of Us Part 1.

Since before The Last of Us Part 1 was even announced, many have assumed that the remake will take the improved gameplay mechanics and level design of The Last of Us Part 2 and apply it to the original game, rather than just being a simple visual upgrade, though it very much seems like the latter might turn out to be true.

That’s according to a recent leak that originally emerged on Reddit before being deleted (though the information from it was collated on ResetEra). How the leaker got their hands on the game remains unknown, but they did leak several previously unseen screenshots from the earlier parts of the game, as well as a clip showing the cutscene from the game’s prologue involving Joel and his daughter. Check them out below.

The leaker, interestingly enough, also claims that The Last of Us Part 1 doesn’t feature any gameplay improvements, contrary to what many have believed will be the case. Back when the game was first announced, Naughty Dog said that it would feature various improvements and AI upgrades from The Last of Us Part 2, but did not elaborate. According to the leaker, however, while the game has improvements to audio, animations, visuals, and accessibility features, the gameplay has remain unchanged from the original The Last of Us.

The leaker also claims that the remake will have both 40 FPS an 60 FPS Modes on PS5, and will also feature VRR support. Read more on that through here.

Given the backlash against The Last of Us Part 1 since its announcement and discussions regarding whether or not the game is a cash grab – especially given its $70 price point – this is far from good news. The folks behind the game insist that a lot of care and attention has gone into the project, and while there’s no doubting that, there not being any gameplay improvements to speak of would a huge disappointment for many- if that is indeed the case, of course.

It’s worth mentioning that the leaker hasn’t provided any additional clips or screenshots or explained how they got access to the game. All that has been directly shown in this leak so far is from the very early minutes of the game, which might not be the best chunk to play when testing any gameplay improvements.

Naughty Dog recently said that it would have more details to share on The Last of Us Part 1’s improvements to visuals and gameplay before launch, so hopefully we’ll have more clarity on exactly what the latter entails not long from now.

The Last of Us Part 1 recently went gold and will be launching for PS5 on September 2. A PC version of the game is also in development.
