If you’ve seen bits of what appear to be pets in The Outer Worlds 2, particularly its latest trailer, good news: They’re officially available at launch. While Obsidian Entertainment didn’t confirm the total number of creatures that could become pets, director Brandon Alder revealed at least one and how they would work to Game Informer.

“We have lots of different types of creatures in the game. We actually had a pretty enormous list that we went through and were like, ‘Alright, which of these different NPCs or creatures do we want to take and convert into pets?'”

Pets can be found in the wild, purchased or even received as rewards when fulfilling requests. You can have one pet with you at all times and another on your ship. One such example is a Protectorate Drone, but since it can’t fight, you have to wonder if other pets can.

“I think people just like having pets and petting them and having them along for the journey. You can get a whole bunch of them, but can only have one active at a time, and you choose which active pet you want in your ship, and they stay on your ship.” While they can’t die, Alder ominously said that players can ultimately treat them well or “be cruel, it’s up to you.”

The Outer Worlds 2 launches on October 29th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Alongside pets, it will include another much-requested feature: A third-person perspective that you can switch to at any time. Obsidian originally wasn’t planning to implement it, but ultimately changed course about two years ago. You can learn more about that here.
