The Outer Worlds 2

Developer Obsidian Entertainment has made use of the Flaws system in its latest RPG – The Outer Worlds 2 – to poke fun at players who bought the $100 Premium Edition of the title. Discovered by Reddit user Disenchantor, the Flaw is dubbed Consumerism, and jokes about players like the poster being one of the reasons why marketing works.

Besides being humorous, the Flaw also has gameplay effects, reducing Vendor Prices by 15 percent and reducing Sell Value at Vendors by 10 percent. Thankfully, players who don’t want to spend the whole game with this can opt to reject it.

“The Earth Directorate found a Flaw in you! Consumerism. You’re the reason our marketing works. Promotions and sales have riddled your brain, and you’re more interested in buying the next big thing than financial planning.”

As more users have gotten advanced access to The Outer Worlds 2, more of the Flaws that players can get are being discovered. Another Reddit user – Hefty-Paramedic1934 – revealed a Flaw they got for skipping through dialogue. Dubbed Foot-In-Mouth Syndrome, it provides players with an additional 15 percent more experience while also making player-based decisions at random on the player’s behalf.

“You’ve been racing through conversations and seem to hate the idea of having to talk with others,” reads the description of the Flaw. “Your choices in conversations are now randomly picked for you after a few seconds, but you gain a bonus to all experience earned.”

While those who bought the Premium Edition of The Outer Worlds 2 can already start playing, others will have to wait for its October 29 release date across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Leading up to its release, quite a few details about the RPG have been revealed by the developers. Just last week, game directors Brandon Adler and Matt Singh spoke about the reactive companions that players will be able to meet and befriend, and how they can also get into fights with the player if their goals and motivations don’t align.

“One of the things that was really important is we wanted these characters to feel like they’re their own people,” said Singh. “They have their own goals, their own motivations, and if the player’s aligning with them, that’s great. They’re going to be there for you. They’ll fight alongside you. But if you go against their interests, they’re going to have something to say about it. That might break out into a conflict, which might mean they leave you or you have to fight them to the death. But if you do build that relationship with them, they’ll be there for you in the end.”

Adler went on to note that, while some players might be worried about betrayal from their companions, these events won’t happen out of the blue. Rather, the companions will offer players plenty of warning before they become hostile.
