Layers of Fear
Layers of Fear succeeds in how it manifests our playable artist’s inner psychological torment as a shapeshifting physical world, making the player doubt themselves and everything around them as they navigate through the artist’s maddening obsessions. The haunted house trope works exceptionally well here – furniture darts across rooms, doors disappear, corridors lead to deeper, darkening corners of the artist’s psyche. Subsequent Layers of Fear entries maximised the psychological horror, but this first entry melded character development and atmosphere the best.
