Wheatley originally had a different voice
It’s really hard to picture Wheatley without Stephen Merchant, because he did a fantastic job of voicing Wheatley. Seriously, for those of you that haven’t played the game, watch the video above. In one of the original trailers, Wheatley was voiced by one of Valve’s animators Richard Lord, who did a good job, but it really doesn’t feel the same without Merchant. The writers also seriously considered Richard Ayoade, star of The IT Crowd and the director of Submarine, to play the role of Wheatley.
