Portal 2 originally had you play a character called Mel

Chell is a unique character, because like Gordon Freeman, she is her own person, with awesome characteristics and has a flair for destruction and creativity. However the developers of Portal 2 were at one time quite convinced that Chell wasn’t going to be in Portal 2 and they had a replacement for her in the form of Mel. Mel had blonde hair and a different colored jumpsuit. What made the developers change their mind was that everything that Chell had done in Portal as well as develop an  intimate story and relationship with GlaDOS. When this was initially changed in Portal 2 it made the test players feel icky towards Mel. Hence Chell came back, and we are glad she did.
