I imagine every Portal fan was astounded when GlaDOS became a potato, because it was quite hard to really imagine that the intelligent super computer became a vegetable, but there was reason for this idea. The developers knew that eventually GlaDOS and Chell would have to work side by side, but were trying desperately to figure out how they could make that happen. So they thought of the most humiliating thing that could happen to her; she could become a potato. And it was implemented into the gameplay quite flawlessly.
