Credit where it’s due to One More Level for delaying Valor Mortis to avoid the September rush, since its first-person Souls-like combat has room to shine. Launching next week, a new trailer showcases the horrors an alternative-history Napoleonic-era plague has unleashed on Europe.
You’ll play as James Alexander, a former soldier under the Emperor who’s revived by mysterious means. However, he’s forced to contend with the monstrosities left in his wake. There are the soldiers twisted into walking on all fours…but backwards, their heads opening up into vicious maws. A massive entity appears to be two soldiers fused, throwing bombs at passersby.
That’s not even getting into the ordinary citizens transformed by the plague, losing legs and growing wings in the process. It’s all James can do to harness whatever weapon is available, be it muskets or two-handed swords, to fight back. Meanwhile, The Shrike, who leads the rebellion (and is played by Jennifer English), warns him that his Emperor doesn’t exactly have the people’s best interests at heart, if all the nightmarish creations weren’t enough of a hint.
Valor Mortis launches October 13th on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Check out the overview trailer here to learn more about the various Transmutations, Catalysts and Embers James can wield to specialize in different kinds of combat and gain some leverage over his foes.
