THE LAST OF US
Joel is perhaps one of the best protagonists we’ve ever seen in a game in years, and one of the things that makes him so compelling is his conflicted morality. This here’s a man who’s done a lot of questionable stuff. But even if he don’t delve into his past and only consider his actions in The Last of Us, he still deserves a place in this list. His decision to save Ellie in the end and to kill all the Fireflies is one that is hard to defend from an ethical viewpoint. Not only does he kill a lot of people – many of whom are simply people doing their jobs and not really doing anything to threaten him, like the doctors – he also chooses to save Ellie when he knows that not doing so might lead to a cure for all of humanity. That’s the very definition of selfish.
