We’re not used to much nuance in Pokemon stories, but Black and White really broke the mould. Sure, Ghetsis was comically evil, and Team Plasma’s plans ultimately boiled down to “ruling the world” in the end, but what we’re concerned with here is N, the young leader of Team Plasma. N viewed Pokemon as his friends rather than as tools for sport and combat, despised the concept of Pokeballs, and capturing Pokemon and making them do their bidding, and wanted to free all Pokemon from human oppression. And really, if it hadn’t been revealed that Team Plasma didn’t actually care about that and just wanted to rule over the world, it would have been hard not sympathizing with N’s worldview.
