The last couple of years have seen gaming giants like Microsoft, PlayStation, Tencent, the Embracer Group, and many others acquiring game development studios, both big and small, and questions about whether other studios in the industry are also looking to be picked up by a potential purchases refuse to go away. One company, however, that plans to retain its independence is CD Projekt.
Speaking in an interview with Polish outlet Rzeczpospolita about whether or not the Polish studio could potentially look to be purchased by another company, president Adam Kiciński said that they have no such plans, nor are they looking for investments or minority stakes from other companies.
“We have been repeating for years that we plan to remain independent and do not plan to become part of a larger entity,” Kiciński said. “We are also not looking for a strategic investor.”
That said, Kiciński also said that CD Projekt itself will continue to examine possibilities of acquiring other studios, which is something it has done on occasion over the last few months. Earlier this year, CD Projekt acquired Digital Scapes and established it as CD Projekt RED Vancouver, and just a month ago, also acquired indie developer The Molasses Flood.
“As part of the strategy update, we announced greater activity in the M&A area, which we confirmed in recent months with two transactions,” Kiciński said. “Both fit perfectly into our development plans – the Vancouver team joined CD Projekt Red, while The Molasses Flood is working on a game as part of one of our franchises.”
“We do not rule out further transactions of this type in the future,” he continued. “The goal of our acquisitions is to strengthen development teams and obtain additional support in the implementation of our strategy.
“Therefore, in this type of investments, we are most interested in experience and competences, and we attach great importance to whether a given team will fit into the culture of our group.”
Meanwhile, in the same interview, Kiciński also confirmed that CD Projekt RED is going to begin simultaneous development on multiple new AAA projects in 2022. Read more on that through here.
