What Microsoft, Nintendo And Sony Need To Do To Achieve Success In Next Gen

7. Continue improvements in online services

Microsoft and Sony have truly outdone themselves recently with the amount of subsidiary services they offer through Xbox Live and the Sony Entertainment Network respectively. Netflix, Lovefilm, Last FM. Etc. Just being able to play games online was so 2006 (unless you only have a Wii), so it makes sense that more multimedia services need to make their way onto consoles of the future.

8. Include backwards compatibility

When it comes to many things, the Wii falls down in comparison to its current gen competition. One thing Nintendo absolutely nailed though, was backwards compatibility. I’ve never had a problem running any of my old Gamecube games and peripherals through a Wii, something that sure as hell can’t be said about Microsoft’s meagre efforts at Xbox emulation. When the hell will I be able to play Shadow of Memories on my 360 Microsoft?! And don’t even get me started on Sony’s attitude towards backwards compatibility.

9. Make sure consoles acually work

One of these a decade is about all I could handle

In previous console generations, there was no such thing as a red ring or yellow LED of death. If your console broke, it was either a freak accident or a really dumb move on your part. Our recent console generation, by comparison, has been an unmitigated disaster of hardware failure, and Microsoft stand out as the worst perpatrator of this particular crime. Make sure you get your solder done properly this time around guys, as continued hardware screw ups are unlikely to be forgiven once more.
