Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Is “Looking Forward” To Working With Bungie After Activision Split

Don’t read too much into it.

Destiny 2 The Dawning 2017

After yesterday’s news of the unexpected divorce between Activision and Bungie (which, miraculously enough, saw Bungie retain full control of the Destiny IP), there have been many questions about what is next for Bungie, and the Destiny universe. Those are questions that remain unanswered for now, but in general, it seems like other gaming industry professionals are optimistic about where Bungie might be headed now.

One of those professionals is none other than Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who, responding to Bungie’s announcement on Twitter, expressed excitement at working with one of his “favorite independent developers”, as well as for the future of Destiny.

Given the history Bungie and Microsoft share—Bungie was formerly an Xbox first party developer, and the custodian of the Halo franchise, before they extricated themselves from that arrangement to work on Destiny—there are undoubtedly those who will want to read way too much into this, and believe that this might be indication that Spencer is looking to acquire Bungie, much like he has so many other developers. That said, I feel like this is just a platitude from him (albeit one with genuine feeling), and should mean nothing more than that.

We’ll know for sure in the coming weeks and months what the future of Bungie holds, at any rate.
