Xbox One X’s 12GB Memory Allowed World of Tanks To Use High Resolution Textures, Dev Explains Lack of 60fps

Wargaming's Chris McCue talks about the Xbox One X not affecting PC development.

While the Xbox One X represents a significant leap forward for consoles, how does it affect the development of PC games? When you consider how much additional power is there, will developers who work on multiple platforms – or even just for the PC and Xbox One – see the latter influencing the former?

GamingBolt spoke to World of Tanks technical director Chris McCue about the overall memory of the Xbox One X and how 9 GB of GDDR5 RAM was allotted to games. With World of Tanks making significant advancements over the years, will Wargaming look to up its PC memory requirements in the future as a result of the Xbox One X’s higher memory?

McCue revealed that since both the PC and Xbox One X versions were developed independently that this wouldn’t be the case. “World of Tanks PC is developed independently from World of Tanks console, so improvements to console hardware won’t have any effect on them. For World of Tanks console, though, the additional memory on the Scorpio gives us the ability to render more higher-resolution textures than we’ve ever been able to do before!”

The development team has already stated that World of Tanks will run in 4K on the Xbox One X. That being said, can the studio pull of graphical settings equivalent to the PC version’s Ultra settings and run it at 60 FPS?

McCue noted that, “The increase in power from the base Xbox One to the Scorpio is a close match for what is required to bring a 1080p game up to 4K, so without significant additional renderer changes it’s not enough to also increase framerate from 30 fps to 60 fps.

“As for graphics settings, because we’re a console title we don’t have user-configurable ‘Ultra’ settings but our artists work hard to ensure the game looks amazing on all of our supported consoles.”

Xbox One X arrives on November 7th for $499. What are your thoughts on its impact for pre-existing Xbox One titles? Let us know in the comments.
