Crytek Shares Secrets of Using Xbox One eSRAM’s Full Potential, Resulted In ‘Big’ Bandwidth Saves

Crytek’s Sean Tracy talks about how the Ryse dev team took advantage of the Xbox One.

The increased power that the Xbox One and PS4 offer over the previous generation of consoles has been as hot a topic now as it was when both consoles launched. However, it’s been observed that the Xbox One falls ever so slightly (at best) behind the PS4 in many frame rate tests, not including the lack of 1080p titles compared to Sony’s console.

Many developers have attributed this to the console’s eSRAM. Crytek has more than its share of experience with the same having developed Ryse: Son of Rome, which is one of the best looking launch titles for either console till date. GamingBolt spoke to Crytek’s US Engine Business Development Manager Sean Tracy about the advantages of using CryEngine when used with tiled textures since eSRAM is more suited for the latter.

“CryEngine has a unique and novel solution for this and was shipped with Ryse. One of the problems when using Deferred Shading is that it’s very heavy on bandwidth usage/memory traffic. This gets exponentially worse as overlapping lights cause considerable amounts of redundant read and write operations. In Ryse our graphics engineers created a system called tiled shading to take advantage of the Xbox One,” Sean explained.

“This splits the screen into tiles and generates a list of all the lights effective each title using a compute shader. It then cull’s light by min/max extents of the tile. We then loop over the light list for each tile and apply shading.

Ultimately this resulted into bandwidth gains and they were able to use just a single compute shader for culling and lighting, which is simply phenomenal. “In practice this made for the biggest bandwidth save we could have hoped for, as just reading the Gbuffer once and writing shading results once at the end for each pixel. Only a single compute shader was used in Ryse for light culling and executing entire lighting and shading pipelines (with some small exceptions for complex surfaces like skin and hair).”

    Both console GPUs are based on AMD GCN (graphics core next) technology, which includes hardware level support for PRT (partially resident textures). That hardware can be exposed to developers through different APIs like OpenGL or DirectX, or utilized by middleware like Granite. The DirectX name is “Tiled Resources” while the OpenGL name is the “AMD_sparse_texture” function.

    Sony’s PS4 APIs may have a custom name and implementation to access PRT hardware functions, or they could be using the OpenGL code.

    Both consoles are able to use hardware level texture tiling to save on memory size and bandwidth. PS4 is not limited to “software only”.

    The Granite SDK supports PC, mac, and mobile phones and basically does the heavy lifting for devs including hardware support if available (according to them).

    “First off, we have added hardware tiling support. On DirectX this is called “Tiled Resources”, but there is also an OpenGL equivalent under the name of “Partially Resident Textures”. Hardware support means that using our technology you will not only have to run less instructions in the shader, but there will also be a reduction in cache sizes (video memory), because no extra pixel borders are needed for cross-tile hardware texture filtering.”

    Both consoles are capable of AMD’s GCN PRT level function. This is exposed to the PS4 and Xbox through different APIs, but the underlying fixed hardware functions. Tiled Resources improves memory bandwidth and size usage, it can help get around Xbox’s ESRAM width/size limits, but it won’t make the GPU better at rendering. The ESRAM needs to be used for the framebuffer, not storing textures.

    That conference is misleading as it doesn’t address texture streaming bandwidth or the importance of the GPU. The texture bits have to be streamed from somewhere into RAM, typically a hard drive. That puts a hard cap on texture streaming bandwidth unless you like seeing lots of pop-in.

    More importantly, even if you had infinite RAM bandwidth and size, you’re still limited by how much your GPU and ROPs can render. Tiled Resources/PRT only increases your ram width/size by decreasing the size of texture data, it doesn’t make the GPU better at rendering. You could bring a GPU to its knees drawing and filling a billion triangles with the same 4Kb texture.

    Tiled Resources may help the Xbox avoid memory width/size bottlenecks, but it’s not a free lunch by any means. Furthermore the Xbox’s ESRAM has to be used for the framebuffer which needs that high bandwidth to avoid memory width bottlenecking the GPU, they can’t waste it on texture data. If your ESRAM is stuffed with streamed, tiled textures where’s your render target going to go? DDR3? Nope, too slow.

    The greatest improvements to Xbox graphics will come from standard API updates, reduction in OS overhead, and better game code, not “activating hidden and unused hardware”.

    Factual PS4 Hardware Advantages: +6 CUs, +560 GFlops (44% greater), +16 ROPs, +6 ACEs/CQs, better GPGPU support, better performing CPU, and faster unified memory. PS4 OS may also have less overhead or reserves.

    Both Sony and MS have world class coders that will extract every bit of performance out of their consoles with their drivers/APIs/SDKs. The difference is PS4 simply has more powerful hardware to work with, so it will always stay ahead in graphics performance.

    Every console has a power budget that can be put towards resolution, framerate, or visual effects. PS4 has a higher total budget than Xbox. Therefore Forza 5 would run better on PS4, and Driveclub would run worse on Xbox.

    Even if Xbox had a far more powerful CPU and 10000GB of 10000 GB/s memory, it’s ability to render graphics is STILL limited by the weaker GPU. There’s no getting around the weaker GPU, there’s no free lunch.

    DDR3+ESRAM is still a size and bandwidth bottleneck and difficult to code for. The DMA registers help transfer data between DDR3 and ESRAM, they aren’t super special sauce.

    PS4 will have better performing games for the entire generation as it has more powerful hardware, you can’t overcome a hardware gap with better drivers/SDKs. Any game running on Xbox One can be run with better framerate/resolution/visual effects on PS4.

    If they’re both running at the same resolution the Xbox version will have lower framerate and/or visual effects, or the PS4 hardware isn’t being pushed.

    Xbox has memory size and bandwidth bottlenecks, weak GPU and GPGPU, only 16 ROPs, and OS virtualization overhead that all degrade gaming performance. Take your pick.

    PS4’s large GPGPU advantage will widen as devs take advantage of it. It’s not just 2 to 8 ACEs (asynchronous compute engines), but the volatile bit, unified memory, and added bandwidth paths from CPU direct to GPU. Not only does PS4 have more CUs to do compute on, but it can do compute work more efficiently with less impact on rendering.

    Examples of GPGPU include Resogun’s voxels, Infamous’ particle system, The Order’s soft body, cloth, and object destruction physics, and MGS’s simulated weather. To port those to Xbox devs will need to reserve already limited CUs for compute or remove those features entirely (as in MGS). And last I checked, PS4’s CPU still performs better than Xboxes, for whatever reason.

      You love talking about the GPU but you still ignore the reality of the situation. If the goal is 1080p the X1 GPU has already proven it can process 1080p. The extra resource of the Ps4 may end up being used for the GPGPU work since the CPU in the Ps4 will be bottlenecked because gddr5 isnt good Ram for CPUs.
      I hear people say the Ps4 is more powerful all the time and all i ask is that they prove it. The X1 destroys it in features and foundation. All we have seen is that its easier to port old game engines to the Ps4. I want to se thins alleged power. Right now the most impressive game I have seen is Ryse. Say what you will its lighting texture models effects are the best as of right now. That is a better display of power than COD Ghosts or AC4

      The CPU isn’t the bottleneck in most gaming situations. Yes, the Xbox 1 can do 1080p/60fps, however, as he said, there is a budget. If you want 1080p/60fps, then other aspects must be degraded: lighting, shaders, polycount, post-processing effects, particles, etc. Forza is 1080/60, but it looks like a nicer version of a last gen game because of it. Ryse is graphically gorgeous, but it is limited to optimized set pieces and 900p, whereas Infamous is open world with crazy draw distances.

    I welcome reveals at E3 and then later on this year and next.

    It’s about games, and while raw power of the hardware is something needed to push the visuals and game play forward, there also must be balance. Take a full-blown 454 engine and slap it into a cars frame, may give you raw power, but the performance comes from the entire system being balanced. Overall weight, the distribution thereof, displacement, powertrain, suspension, wheels, tires – the overall balance. I’ll not ever say ‘I told you so’ – but there’s about to be a major shake up in computing, which will DIRECTLY be seen in this new gen of console hardware (as they are both basically just PCs stuffed into smaller casings.)

    This is where we will see the gains we are wanting. Raw power doesn’t always equal best performance, remember that.

    Besides, it’s WAY too early to see what either system is fully capable of, regardless of one’s view on the ‘who’s winning.’

    Tiled resources is nothing new, so continuing to talk about it like it is just giving false hope of something worth while.

    To talk like ryse is something special in the graphical dept is hilarious in its own. The game is a completely scripted QTE that “ONLY” lets you do what the game wants you to. Scripted right down to where you go and how you get there.

    Infamous SS is a prettier looking game that has much more to offer in regards to fidelity and capability of the game itself. Open world like that compared to a game that is on rails there is no comparison.

      Yep & both systems have this hardware level implementation of tiled resources, they both have PRT.
      Being able to shift 176GB/s & store 8192MB worth of data in RAM means PS4 is not only faster, but much more flexible at tiling compared to Xbox One.
      Tiling is only one factor, but it’s definitely something that PS4 can use at a hardware level & too a far more extensive level.

    Sigh, It drives me mad when people who don’t know the difference between a shader instruction list and ESRAM. First both Crytek and Insomniac are focused on X1 and the ESRAM optimization. And it Either Crytek or Unreal in 99% of AAA games so this article is about the people making the heart and soul of the games to come. And Unreal has also made similar points.
    ESRAM allows graphical objects to be passed by essentially by pointers across the CPU/GPU barrier abd the hardware picks it up it is like a crossbar scrachpad in the cold fire processors in most of your network home routers. This ESRAM IS the fundamental harware core of DX12. This is also why NVIDIA is putting in its 8XX series.
    Now if you don’t understand what that means then then maybe you ought to learn how low level programming hardware acceleration works before slamming the X1.
    Oh and no matter how well AMD’s mantle system is, the PS4 will never have native hardware acceleration for it. so what you see now is as good as it gets.

      They made a beautiful game which was very limited in what could be done. So didn’t really push the machine. It was after all a great big cut screen, with lots of QE. All this tiled resources etc, why is this the 1st we’re all really hearing about. Because it’s m$ struggling to explain the disparity. With promises of future special sauce.

      I know what you mean, I’ve built up quite a hard skin. As a PS3 owner I’ve had to put up with 360 fan boys trolling sites for years. I like to disagree while being a little funny and cheeky, its more fun!!!

I just try to point out flaws in articles and have a bit of fun at the same time. I mean who really cares what I think, i hardly do sometimes :-)

Can’t decide if I want a new pc rig($1500) or just go cheap and get a ps4 down the road. I don’t habe time to game on 3 different platforms.

      If you get a 1500 rig, that’s capable of 4k, you still need to get a monitor or TV and they are just too expensive. My PC is an overclocked i5 which is fine for games that need a mouse etc, but for a gaming machine in my front room to share with mates its PS4. That way I feel I get best of both worlds. No need for the X1 in my eyes, as anything on X1 wil be on PC, it doest work other way though if you have X1 and a PC still cant play Uncharted etc!!

      True that but for me most of my friends have X ones. Also I have friends and family that work for ms in Redmond I live like maybe 30 min away from Microsoft headquarters as well. I am kinda in the MS family you could say.

      Mate, really no way out for you :-) Here in UK while most mates had 360’s a large majority moved to PS3 by the end of the cycle Last of Us really got ‘em over. I’ve just never really been impressed with M$. They’ve bullied they’re way to the top and have just copied other ideas and then thrown money at it. I don’t see the innovation that other do. Kenect wasn’t the 1st camera added to a machine. I would love to see X1 spun off, to remove the shackles of management like Donny boy etc, alot of the Xbox failures over the years I believe have come from the top to squeeze more money out of the fans.

      Future being Tiled Resources which benefits any machine so what’s a miracle about it? Xbox performing worse on last gen engines and claims thatnew engines it’ll be better is automaticaly some type of a miracle? Face it neither console is powerful as x360 ps3 were when they released. So trying to brag how your 180cc moped is more powerful than my 131cc is so funny considering there are big boys with 1200cc. Sony didn’t do a single thing that’s next gen so face it. Just hope that they don’t go bankrupt in next few years as things are looking very bad for them losing billions each year for past 10 years

So don’t really care about your 1200. As for Sony losing billions true, I don’t see it effecting the ps4,the same as x1 being spun wouldn’t damage it.       PS3 outsold 360 in total sales even when 360 had a year head start release with 7+ million, which means that no MS home console has so far outsold a Sony home console to date ( and doesn’t look like that would be changing anytime soon )

      For many years The 360 out sold the PS3. It wasn’t until Nov/Dec 2012 that the Ps3 gain a significant lead. Sony lost tons of money with the price cuts to even get it to that point. and currently 360 is at 83 mill with sony at an unknown >80 nice read for you
