Dev On PS4/Xbox One Resolution & FPS Debate: Games Should Run At ’60fps, No Matter What’

MixedBag’s Mauro does believe it “depends a lot on the kind of game you’re making” though.

PS4 Xbox one

It’s amazing how a standard that’s been so prevalent on the PC for so many years has become such a hot issue on the new generation of consoles. Then again, the Xbox One and PS4 were built with power in mind and to see them unable to deliver on 1080p/60 FPS – which has been marketed as a golden standard for video game visuals – is a bit disheartening.

That being said, some have attempted to rationalize the debate and say that it’s not all about frame rates or resolution. MixedBag’s Mauro, who worked on Futuridium EP Deluxe, was asked by Gaming Bolt about whether developers really care about this debate.

“Yes, all developers care. In an ideal world every game would run at 1080p/60fps on console, or higher, but a lot of times it’s simply not possible, and developers have to make a choice, and it’s always not an easy one. Also it depends a lot on the kind of game you’re making.”

His own personal opinion though? “60fps, no matter what.”

I find it funny when people want to bring in a PC when discussing consoles. The reason that consoles excel is because they are simply plug n play, whereas you have to have some form of intelligence in computers to keep your rig up and running.

OT: I think 30fps is fine as long as it is the design choice. If you have two different versions of the same game on different consoles then it’s a problem, because it’s clear that the designer could not reach what they desired on at least one console.

60fps is great for motion, but not always the best choice for visuals.

We are talking about consoles, so what can be done the pc is of no interests to me. I own both the Xbox1 and PS4, and my view is simple. Devs, should get the best performance at the best resolution as each console will allow so if they have to run Xbox games at 900p upscaled to 1080 to keep the framerates up, then, so be it, I am all for that.

  • Hi, Mauro from MixedBag here!

In the interview my focus was on console, so I took the 1080p/60 as a reference.
I think it was pointless to talk about PC too, totally different matter. 🙂

Haha. I think Ravi shouldn’t have really threw PC in there. Some of these console gamers r really comparing their system to PCs, I guess to get a hint at the power within. People r zealots man. Anyway, I think frame rate and resolution ALWAYS depends on the game genre, design, etc. I’d take 30fps on a beautiful 3rd person game, over 60fps for the same game, that sacrifices visuals. Mainly because 3rd person are not twitch shooters.
