Industry Insider: Watch_Dogs PS4 Will Be Better Than Xbox One, Expects Performance To Widen In Future

“I didn’t think we’d see performance differences this large so early, but the jury is still out.”

Earlier today it was confirmed that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will run at 60 fps on the PlayStation 4 whereas the frame rate on the Xbox One is still unconfirmed. However various sources believe that the Xbox One version will run at 30 fps. According to industry insider Ahsan Rasheed this trend will continue on future multiplatform games like Watch_Dogs.

“Wait till Watch_Dogs :). PC>>PS4>>>>Xbox One >>>>>WiiU,” he tweeted.  Although this is his personal opinion, it won’t come off as a major surprise if this actually happens. Ever since the launch of next gen consoles, the Xbox One has struggled to keep pace with PlayStation 4. Several multi-platform games like Assassin’s Creed 4 and Call of Duty Ghosts have higher resolutions on the PlayStation 4.

He also believes that as time goes on, the gap between between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will widen. “Further PS4 optimizations in year 3/4 will widen the delta of performance gap,” he tweeted. He also did not expected to see such performance difference this early.

Back in July last year, Ubisoft confirmed to us that they don’t expect to see major difference between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Watch_Dogs. We will see how all of this pans out when Watch_Dogs receives a solid release date.

Maybe this why it was delayed

    • dgarra

I don’t think you delay for nearly a year unless there are some fundamental issues with the game, not just technical hang ups.

    • Aidan Murphy

      Ubi to W_D team:

Woah, hold it guys!!! We’re delaying you for 6 months, sony just payed us sh*t loads to make their version better ! HA!

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t be surprised the way things are going at the moment, with 3 games already higher res or FPS then I’m pretty sure it’ll happen to quite a few more games, this is just the tip of the iceberg

    • Daniel Dorestant

I was actually thinking more along the lines of the X1 version needing more time to be on par with the Ps4 version

    • DarthDiggler

I don’t think Sony needs to pay people to make games better on the PS4, the hardware helps a good deal there.

    • Daniel Dorestant

I would say technical hang ups are one of the most fundamental issues there are with games

    • DarthDiggler

I don’t think it was delayed a year.

  • mad games

that is 100% true guys, think about it for 1 minute Ps4 has GDDR5 which is faster then Xbox 1 GDDR3 by less 50% so yes that is true and the Ps4 has this advantage.

    • postedup0

The GPU and CPU are also superior on PS4. I’m actually surprised there isn’t a bigger difference.

    • mad games

Agree with 100% man also the CPC and the GPU on one chip …

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

    • mad games

Sorry my mistake CPU & GPU on one chip….

    • dave

Nothing can beat the bargain £349/$400 you pay for the PS4 in terms of value for money against incredible gaming performance. The PS4 is the gaming bargain of the decade, and that is why it is selling by millions.

    • Dakan45

screw off dan, seriously stop with this bargain bullcrap already, seriously, buy the damn thing already, you go everywhere and post this crap without buying the godamn system, just freaking buy it alreday and stop spamming.

    • Michael King

      His name’s Dave, not Dan:)

    • Dakan45

his name is dave/dan and he goes around saying the same crap.

    • datdude

You tell em’. I’m not sure that guy has a brain left though. You may be better off leaving the troll alone.

    • Andrew

But .. the XB1 is selling by millions, too.

    • bizzy gie

But Xbox One has a $100 camera I’ll never use and TVeeeeeee. And internet-based potential power.

    • Body_landslide

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

An APU contains both EDIT:If that’s what you meant then my bad.

    • johnnyappleseed69

also the way the system communicates between them using a shared pool of gddr5 is superior in every way possible.

    • Neco The Sergal

Xbox One uses DDR3 RAM. GDDR5 is the Graphical RAM that PS4 uses.

GDDR3 GPU’s were pretty much used in 2004-2007 before being replaced by GDDR4. Wherein most PC Hardware, if you buy a GPU, it has GDDR5 on it these days but both Sony and Microsoft got custom GPU’s so they aren’t precisely the same as average PC GPU’s on the market as such, X1 doesn’t have any GDDR-anything, just regular DDR3 RAM.

    • Mikesims Sims

The 3-4 year performance gap widening is devs getting a handle on PS4’s better GPGPU capability.

    • Bill Balmer

What advantage Microsoft has the Cloud , over time Xbone will make PS4 look like last gen !! , trust Microsoft… they never lie ! just like back then with the Xbone DRM requirem… oh nvm

    • robert griffin

I agree with you I think azure is going to blow people away, but its about 6 months to a year away before we see how much. Xbox is more forward thinking.

    • Goodgrief

      Look up the word “sarcasm”.

    • KeeseToast

Sony has Gaikai, do you really think they wont do the same thing as Microsoft?? They will stream full PS3 games this summer…

    • Zack Wooten

And how are we better off with paying for streaming games compared to what they could’ve given us, which was support for our PS3 games in our new PS4’s.

    • KeeseToast

Yeah but that would be harder to achieve, you need to have good working emulator, but yes they should do this streaming games is just nice to have

    • Asad Naqvi

Streaming is different then could based AI processing. Gaikai while amazing is compressed video being shot to a screen with a control instruction being sent over IP. Where as in Forza/Titanfall is actually AI making decisions about how to behave in the game in real time.

Go continue your smoke in your Cloud. No wonder you cant see things clearly.

I almost didn’t finish reading your comment.

    • bizzy gie

Nice one. You almost had me going.

    • Joseph Sanz

in a few years you will be dissapointed 🙁

    • Dakan45

NO, its not the godamn ram, its the gpu, the gpu is the problem, that rumor about xbox one being 50% weaker? it was reffering to the GPU not the CPU not the ram, the gpu is the problem of xbone.

    • Marc Ravesteijn

Get your facts straight. The Xbox one doesnt have 8GB GDDR3 memory, its has DDR3, the normal RAM used in PC’s. Also: you just remember you read 50% somewhere and scream it out now… its not that the RAM of the PS4 is 50% faster. first of all DDR3 and GDDR5 cant be easilly compared since they work quite different. as the G in the name says, it is specialized in GRAPHICS, so specialized games. The 50% you refer to was the GPU. The CPU/GPU combination of the PS4 has 50% more RAW calculating power then the Xbos one.

No hate, just giving the right info 😉

    • bizzy gie

Xbox One has DDR3 not GDDR3.

    • Joseph Sanz

GDDR 3 doesn´t even exist, the first of that type was GDDR 4 and was replaced fast for the GDDR5

    • bizzy gie
  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

With a new year comes a new war-which has begun!

  • datdude

Poor xbots. The news gets worse every day for that cable box passthrough..err uhh game console they call the xbone.

    • James Bauer

Oddly enough, I have used the “Watch TV” feature on my X1, for everything other than watching tv… I connect my PC to it, so I can do things like watch a walkthrough online while playing the game, and I connect my 360 to it, so I can seamlessly switch between playing games on both platforms – it is an ingenious feature.

    • datdude

How is that ingenious when I do all that and more using my smartTV and A/V receiver?

    • James Bauer

So because something else does it, means it isn’t ingenious?…typical ignorant anti-MS rhetoric. So I guess Portal wasn’t innovative because Narbacular Drop did it first? Uncharted not innovative because Tomb Raider did it first? PS4 has streaming of games? OnLive did it first. It can Stream TV? This has been on PC for years. Game DVR? also PC. A subscription-based free games system via PS+? Gamefly does this.

What makes it ingenious is that it is available on a game console. Allowing players to say use their PC to access the internet while playing a game on the same device, is a bit more ingenious than allowing a player to play a game and access the internet on a different device like a SmartTV .

    • datdude

Whatever helps you sleep at night guy. The things you listed are for the most part improvements on the original. The Xbone is in no way an improvement or even competitive with what I can accomplish with my smartTV and A/v setup. Sorry if you don’t realize that, but those are the facts.

    • James Bauer

“Whatever helps you sleep at night guy”

      same to you…

In order for you to achieve what the X1 can do with your SmartTV and A/V setup, you need a smartTV and a A/V setup – the X1 is all inclusive. it’s essentially plug n play. Not everyone games on a TV, and not everyone has an A/V receiver. I do all my gaming on my monitor, and even if I played on my SmartTV (yes, I have one) I don’t have an A/V receiver. Are you seeing the problem with your claim yet? It’s a situational scenario.

  • robert griffin

What i dont understand is how COD ran at 60 fps on the xbox 360. I dont really care because im buying a Steam box which will really be the only true next gen console. I plan on getting one of the high end ones I know its more but Im saving up for it but dont plan on spending more than 1600.

    • johnnyappleseed69

      its a pc….

    • Andrew

A Steambox is essentially a gaming console that runs PC games. It probably has more gaming-specific functions than any other console out there; that is, I doubt it has a Netflix app whereas the others do.

    • Dakan45

there is no steambox, only steam machines, steam machines are prebuilt compact living room pcs. They have an os with extra functions its basicly linux,

    • Goodgrief

You need to understand what a console is.

    • newb

It didn’t. The frame rate on last-gen always dropped to 30-40 fps. It was never locked at 60.

    • datdude

How is that going to help you when you can’t play Sony’s stellar exclusives?

  • Dakan45

considering tomb raider is 30 on xbone and 60 on ps4, i think this is true. I wanna see division on xbox one, it will be freaking laughable, or witcher 3.

      HAHAHAHAHAH for sure!!

    • Psionicinversion

well for a start if you read anything the x1 is 30-45 fps and the PS4 is 45-60 fps, its not 60 fps locked its about the max it can achieve but considering i played Tomb raider like 1 year ago on a 1GB 6870 nearly max detail at about 30 fps trust me when i tell ya, 30 fps is more than enough becuase its not a fast paced fps its a take your time action/adventure game where good visuals is more important than 60 fps

    • Dakan45

      thanks for that.

Hooray for next gen consoles not being able to run tomb raider at 60 fps, if you build a 400$pc now it can be done.

I played the game at 60 fps most of the time, the framerate took huge dips for a few seconds when i was close to light sources in the huge shanty town level. Dont know what was up with that, propably memory leaks.

I wouldnt mind playing the game with over 60 fps.

Apparently diffirent teams ported the game, nixxes did the ps4 version and united front games did xbo.

The game doesnt look any noticeably better or diffirent than the pc version, the only diffirence is the character model.

    • Psionicinversion

may get 65 fps im not 100% sure it definately isnt 60fps locked. 30fps is the min for X1 but think there just tooting 60fps cus it can achieve it just not consistently, prolly 60-65 while theres not much going on.

ah right different teams isnt to good although pends on past experience with stuff i guess

  • AlexH

Um, no. As for Tomb Raider 60 frames on PS4 thats wrong to.

    Lastest update:

“UPDATE: A Square Enix representative has sent us the following statement on the whole frame-rate issue. It reads, “Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy.”

It is called publicly saving your AR$E before you release last years game that should be easily done on today’s next gen tech.

And performance margins can not be reached on both platforms and have to be “marginally advertised” as such……

    • Mikesims Sims

PS4 has twice as much gravy confirmed.

    • You are flat out wrong

Tomb Raider: Gravy Edition, exclusive to PS4.

    • Dakan45

“Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy.””

Well crap, thats why i didnt enjoy the game as much, i played it on pc with 60 fps.

  • HalfBlackCanuck

I won an Xbox One. I like it. Honestly wasn’t compelled to keep the PS4 I bought (had it in my house for 40 days, still didn’t open it) FOR THE TIME BEING I couldn’t care less about Sony exclusives (Infamous is first on my ‘will regretfully miss it’ list, but after the Titanfall Alpha, I’m okay with that) I will buy a PS4 later down the road.
That out of the way, I kind of think the gap will widen, close in considerably, and then maybe widen a tad again. No doubt PS4 has more power under the hood and ignoring the cloud (until it is proven) one has to consider DirectX optimization (there’s a reason it’s been around forever) and that, possibly, the PS4 is being exploited at 80% because it’s so simple to optimize for whereas Xbox eight be operating closer to 60% of what it can ultimately do. GDDR5 will always > GDDR3 and a GPU is a GPU but the Xbox 360 architecture and the Cell weren’t actually that far removed. The Xbox was much easier to hit the ceiling on than the Cell was, which accounts for the slow curve of the PS3 lifecycle where the 360 peaked and then kind-of stayed there.
Just a thought. Less than 6 months in we can hardly have a definitive opinion.

  • Steven Solidarios

But Xbone has cables, and cloudz!

  • The PS4 is Winning!!!!! like Charlie Sheen, lol

  • CCD

So…. We’re getting our news from med students now?

  • shark975

Thuway is a dumbass, period. He was wrong on every single bad thing he said about Xbox One (said it was getting a huge downclock, said Microsoft would not have any in stores due to yield issues, said PS4 was launching in Oct because Sony was so amazing and Microsoft so incompetent, on and on, all lies).

I also love this BS of the same neogaffers who said PS4 was 66+% more powerful than XBO, now do this faux-shock of “I didn’t expect the gap to be so big so soon!”. So umm, you said repeatedly on record the XBO was closer to the Wii U than PS4, but two games looking exactly the same, at the same resolution, running a bit faster on PS4, astonishes you? Spare me your BS.

With most games such as NBA2K14, Fifa 14, Madden 25, NFS: rivals, Lego Marvel Superheros, being IDENTICAL in all respects on Xbox One, I wonder if “no gap at all” was the projected outcome for the “66+% more powerful” PS4 by thuway? And hell,720P BF4 actually arguably looks BETTER on XBO than the 900P PS4 version. Dont believe me, go check youtube side by side comparisons.

Thuway’s garbage about how the PS4 gap will widen in years 3-4 is also just that. Wishful thinking. I believe the gap will close. Dev’s will figure out the Xone which is the more complicated to program for due to the ESRAM. So it’s actually illogical to conclude the self confessed easier to program for console will grow the gap. But Sony fanboys dont care about logic anyway.

The gap is actually very small. The TR games will look the same graphically, nobody cares about 60 FPS in an action game, and if you’ll read carefully the GAF Sony employees even admit the XBO version runs >30, the PS4 version <60. Interesting to see what the REAL averages are…luckily digital foundry does real frame rate testing, not neogaf "always make sony look good" bs. Otherwise we'd all be believing the Sony fanboy lie KZ MP runs 60, when testing shows it's actually more like 45. Same for Gran Turismo, God of War and countless other Sony exclusives lied and said to be 60 FPS by fanboys like Thuway, that were found to be wanting in the frame rate dept. under REAL testing.

In the end, Xbox wins. It's the same game, with the same graphics, the vastly superior Xbox controller, the vastly superior Xbox online and OS, and Xbox wins. We already see PS4's sitting on Amazon shelves in the UK, wont be long till USA is the same (and that's at $100 less for more power! Truly stunning) Once Xbox falls to 399, PS4 will be sunk for good. And Xbox will always be MASSIVELY cheaper to produce than PS4, because DDR3 is MASSIVELY cheaper than GDDR5 and that gap will continue to widen over the years as GDDR5 is phased out in favor of stacked RAM on GPU's.

    • You are flat out wrong

Dry your eyes, Xbot. Your controller sucks, your line up sucks and the XBL community sucks. PS4 >>> Wii U >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dogshit >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cancer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Xbone

    • I still can’t get over the irony within your name.

    • James Bauer

Other than give multiple examples of what an opinion is, your post contains no actual substance…

    • You are flat out wrong

Don’t worry Xbot, maybe they’ll make you an Ambassador when MS starts enacting massive emergency price cuts.

  • angel

Games make the console not the graphics. We will see what will come out of ps4. I have not seen anything worth spending 400 dollars yet. New version of old games,

  • You are flat out wrong

    Another one bites the dust.

I guess we’re going to see very shortly the real reason why Kojima wants people to play Ground Zeroes on the PS4.

  • Los Illuminados

    Sweet! PS4 baby.

  • Bobby Griffin

Why all the fuss kids if you like sony buy it and if you like xbox buy that. Just go play it whatever and STFU
