Watch_Dogs Entire Map Revealed, Compared With Grand Theft Auto 4 And GTA 5

How does Chicago compare to Liberty City and Los Santos?

WatchDogs_Vigilante-Wards-Gang

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is still less than a week away but that hasn’t stopped fans from spoiling the game willy nilly via leaked retail copies. We’ve been seeing gameplay footage from the PS3, PS4 and Xbox One versions; images of Aiden Pearce’s skills; and much more. An erstwhile Reddit user decided to compare Watch Dogs’ total map size to Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5. How did it fare?

First, a rough construct of the world map in Watch Dogs was created from this video using Photoshop. The result is what you see below along with the possible six districts.

Watch Dogs Map Size

Next, the Watch Dogs map was taken and overlaid on top of the map size for Grand Theft Auto 4. The user has noted that it isn’t 100 percent accurate but that the margin of error was give or take 10 to 20 percent.

How does Watch Dogs compare to Grand Theft Auto 5 in that sense? Check out the following map image which compared the size of GTA 4′s city to GTA 5.

And finally, all three maps laid over each other.

Again, this isn’t an approximate measurement down to the very last building but it still offers a strong indication of the size of Chicago in Watch Dogs.

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Satisfied. They said they were going for density so it’s all good.

    • DimitriTech

i agree. you can actually walk into stores and stuff, not to mention that Chicago has different levels of the city, and from what i saw they included some of this into the map.

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Yes exactly. I love that you can virtually can anywhere on the map with no restrictions, which open world games such as Assassin’s Creed severely lack and would do Ubisoft good to include that. Being able to go anywhere-including through buildings-and do anything is the true meaning of open world, it’s density, not just size.

    • DimitriTech

exactly. That’s one of the main reasons why Watchdogs interests me so much. The world is fantastic, and unlike most game maps before. I wish people would stop comparing it to games like GTAV because it’s an entirely different level of open world. Hopefully one that sets the standard for open world games here on out.

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

yeah there’s so much you can do in the possibilities are limitless with what watch dogs is all about and its premise. I hope that with the benchmark set by this title we will see more open world not only look alive but be alive. I believe that’s what Ubisoft is aiming for. And yeah GTA V is a whole different ball game. let’s hope Assassin’s Creed unity learn something from this and revolutionize next gen Assassin’s Creed.

    • Sean

Not to be too off-topic but speaking of open worlds – I cannot wait for the Witcher 3 and the next Fallout game. Watch dogs looks awesome imo. Cannot wait to sink my teeth into that game and get lost for hours.

I would also agree that density and interactivity in an open world trumps the size of the world. Would I love to have all three – Size, density and interactive? absolutely :)

    • DngnRdr

There’s huge areas of GTAIV & V that are just ‘fake’ buildings… sure you can jump on the roofs but you can’t go inside, they’re just filling space. Watch Dogs seems to let you go almost anywhere, physically (in the game) or virtually (hacking laptop cameras or surveilance systems).

  • Psionicinversion

The thing with GTA 5 is its a massive map but alot of it is filled with nothing really. Chicago is a city and they even cut out alot of the city cus it was to big so they just included the main points of interest and built it smaller

  • http://www.pc-friendly.net/ Darren Hill

When Watch Dogs Los Angeles gets released, size won’t matter anymore…well, that’s what she said.

  • Dennis Crosby

Couple of thing you have to remember alot of GTA 5 map was more open land then city they should of compared the map of watch dogs to the city area of the GTA 5 map

  • oliethegoalie0041

The block size in Watch Dogs looks extremely small compared to GTA V. Could we get the Watch Dogs map blown up to have the same block size and compare the maps then?

    • Z

Ya I noticed that two, it looks like the maps were compared by a GTA fanboy….

  • Sheldon Prescott

GTA 5 map is bigger? I’m done! Not buying the game! lol jk. I’ll prolly preorder tommorrow after the live stream.

  • Guest

    Looks very small to me.

    • Sean

      That’s what she said lmao.

  • PachterStation

Watch Dogs was delayed because of the release of GTA 5.

    • Psionicinversion

well watchdogs was supposed be released 2 months after GTA5 so they had plenty of room for both games so your full of cr@p take it back to the toilet and flush it!!!

    • joe

Delayed 2 months after so they can see what people were loving about GTA and try to make their game better, but brought it to cr@p in the toilet and flushed it.

    • DimitriTech

They delayed it to fix how features worked together, for example, how the reward system would work, or tweaked some features and their availability during different situations.

GTA Online should have been delayed because it clearly wasn’t finished. Eight months after release, and it’s still broken.

  • forrest gump

Gamings like a box of chocolates you never know what you gone get

  • joe

I guess dayz has spoiled me.

  • BEAST

    GTA 5 wins.

WD = crappy optimization, smaller map, no flying

    • Baron Von Rhett

      Fan boy much?

You haven’t even played Watch Dogs I bet so how can you say it has worse optimization? And I would rather have a densely populated city then a big open rock of mostly nothing. As for flying, really? does that really matter at all?

    • dellers

I wouldn’t even like to fly in a city, it wouldn’t make any sense. I wouldn’t want a bigger map filled with nothing. Watch Dogs runs a lot better than GTA IV, which is several years old. I still want GTA V on PC, but for completely different reasons than why I want Watch Dogs. Entirely different games.

  • sony is nearly dead

Watchdogs is the Runt of the litter.

It’s wrong to sell your mom.

  • Luckyca

But… At least watch dogs does not think it is Too Good to come out on PC upon release. GtaV is still not out on PC.

  • john

Lets just hope we will still want to play this when the lame story is over….or its right back to GTAO!

  • Bruno Espirito Santo

The thing i’m most unhappy about the WD map is diversity. I feel like its going to be a sh*t-load of tal buildings just like the GTA IV map :S and i found that terrible…

  • http://www.uberhub.net/ matt @ UBERHUB

I care not of the map tbh the games graphics are sad on all consoles and the gameplay looks dull more than anything it seems very repetitive and aimless. As for people saying density is better size … Stop …The whole point of these next gen games is to be both big and functional.

  • Abhishek Sachan

    shit..its not so large :(

  • Ash Tambent

Yeah but I’d much rather use guns and cars to take down enemies than a smart phone lol… This game is for the new gen of kids who are always glued to their stupid iPhones…

Seriously, how much fun can you have with a glorified mobile phone game?

    • Z

Really? this is nothing like a mobile phone game…… try again.

    • Ash Tambent

How about you read my comment again. Slowly and carefully this time. Thanks pumpkin :)
