Uncharted 2 – Nathan’s Platforming and Running
Naughty Dog has always been a stickler for details in its games, from texture quality and environment design to animation quality. However, as one admires the stellar work put into facial expressions and movement, there’s a wealth of incidental animations to glean as well. Take a look at the Uncharted series. Protagonist Nathan Drake crashes, tumbles and falls through a number of different obstacles. But his reactions are always fitting each.
In Uncharted 2, if Drake lands on a floor that gives way, his balance is disrupted before falling through. He’ll scamper along the ground, especially if unable to keep footing when a pursuing vehicle is exploding behind him. Heck, he’ll even try to use the surrounding walls for support to keep his balance while running. Again, it’s just one of the many things that makes the animation work stand out.
