Map Packs
Before live service became a thing, companies released DLC for their competitive shooters in good old-fashioned map packs. Battlefield, Call of Duty, Titanfall, Halo 2 to 4 and Reach, Halo Wars – the list goes on. You paid X amount of money and received a handful of new maps. Some were meatier than others – the Halo 2 Maptacular Pack added five new maps for $11.99, while Titanfall’s offered three maps each.
Of course, over time, multiple issues – like splitting the player base, longer queue times due to only certain people owning the map packs, and the rise of free-to-play games – saw map packs phased out entirely. With free-to-play games changing their maps and introducing new ones regularly, traditional map packs may be gone for good.
