In the lead up to the PS3’s launch, Sony was reigning supreme, and it showed in how they talked and behaved- they were extremely confident in everything they did, and often to a fault. And while their overconfidence proved to be their undoing for a few years after that, at times, it was hard not to be impressed by that cutthroat boldness. For instance, at E3 2006, while speaking about the PS3, Kaz Hirai flat-out said, “the next generation doesn’t start until we say it does.” And the Xbox 360 had already been out for nearly a year by that point.
