With Microsoft moving further and further into cloud streaming and leaving behind the traditional console model, it makes sense that they’re looking to compete on a much larger scale that companies in the industry have generally done in the past. In early 2020, Xbox boss Phil Spencer went as far as saying that Microsoft no longer even viewed Sony and Nintendo as its competitors, that it would rather be competing against the likes of Amazon and Google. In an interview with Protocol, he said: “I don’t want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world.”
