If there as one thing Metal Gear Solid 4 made perfectly clear, it was that Snake had a sad life, moving from one fight to the next and inadvertently making mistakes that led to even more troubles. He was very much aware of that, and in this heartbreaking moment, that awareness was front and centre. It showed how much Snake had been affected by the events in his past, but it also indirectly made us understand why he was so convicted to make things right before he finally hung up his hat.
