Combat is a crucial part of the experience for the vast, vast majority of games, but creating a fun, mechanically tight, and responsive combat system is easier said than done. That said, quite a lot of games do just that, crafting a web of mechanics that, put together, make the simple act of engaging in duels with enemies an absolute treat. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such games.
GHOST OF TSUSHIMA
In the lead-up to Ghost of Tsushima’s launch, it’s fair to say that its combat was the one aspect that most people were quite skeptical about, but it’s fair to say that those doubts were proven quite wrong when the game actually came out. Ghost of Tsushima’s slick and engaging duels are an absolute treat. Each precise streak has incredible weight, each perfect parry feels oh-so-satisfying, each kill is swift and brutal. It captures the efficiency and precision of samurai combat perfectly, and the addition of multiple different stances, tools, and combat abilities lends a surprising amount of depth to each fight.
