For all the problems with its writing and controls, Shenmue was a forerunner in creating a living open world. Players explore Yokosuka in 1986, connecting with various residents, each with their own lives and schedules. There are several minigames to play and elements to interact with in the city. Even protagonist Ryo Hazuki has to conform to the rules, taking a job and ultimately being back home in time for bed.
