God of War (2018)
God of War has been one of PlayStation’s tentpole releases since the PS2 days, and while the series has generally enjoyed great critical and commercial acclaim with each new entry – the franchise started to run out of steam after Ascension and fans craved for something fresh. Following a brief hiatus, Sony Santa Monica decided to take the series in a new direction with a soft reboot which gave us one of the best action games of recent memory.
God of War 2018 moved on from the Greek mythology setting of the original, and instead found a new home in the Norse realm. The new story replaced the hot headed Kratos with an older father figure, and the gameplay changed perspectives from isometric to an over the shoulder camera for a better view of the action from up close. It’s a complete reimagining of the series which could have ended up pretty badly, but Sony Santa Monica did a great job of retaining the core tenants of the franchise while delivering a game that combines sincere storytelling with the same over-the-top action that has come to characterize the franchise.
