Resident Evil Village calls back to RE4 in many blatant ways, as we’ve already discussed, and one of these happens in the very beginning. When Ethan arrives in the village, he’s attacked by a massive, deadly lycan horde, and just as it seems that things are about to take a deadly turn, bells start tolling in the distance, causing all of the lycans to retreat. This, of course, is a direct reference to the beginning of RE4, where Leon is attacked by a massive swarm of the Gonado, with the attack suddenly ending when bells begin tolling, causing the Gonado to leave.
