For example, look at Suikoden. This role-playing game franchise is one of the more illustrious in history, incorporating aspects of Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan with mature themes and a wide range of characters called the 108 Stars of Destiny. The series peaked with Suikoden 3 on the PS2 in 2002 but saw a slump in 2005 with Suikoden 4. Suikoden 5 was better received in 2006 thanks to its characterization but was still a far cry from the series’ height. Suikoden Tierkreis on the Nintendo 3DS in 2009 was a final hurrah of sorts for the series because Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki was a Japan-only release in 2012 for PSP. No Suikoden since then, sadly.
