Virtua Fighter
Make no mistake, Tekken 4 in 2002 was a solid release but Virtua Fighter 4 was stealing its spotlight. It’s funny to think that Virtua Fighter was a franchise in search of an audience, especially after the third game. As soon as it came to a PlayStation console with Virtua Fighter 4, it unseated its biggest rival. This trend would continue with Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution in 2003 and though 2007’s Virtua Fighter 5 was just shy of the same brilliance, it was still backed by critical acclaim. In an age that sees Tekken continue to live on and SoulCalibur mounting a comeback, Virtua Fighter is sorely missed.
