The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S continue to be sold out, even over a year out from their launch, and while a lot of that is, of course, down to the global semiconductor shortage and the subsequent shortage of supplies, there’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that the new consoles are selling very well.

And that growth is something that will continue into 2022, according to AMD CEO Lisa Su. During a recent Q&A with investors (via Wccftech), Su talked about the impressive sales of both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, before stating that she expects sales to grow in 2022, before likely hitting their peak in 2023.

“I think the console business, this console cycle and all when you look at it in totality, has been amazing,” Su said. “I mean if you think about the strength of the cycle, now we’re sort of deep into the second year and the fact that the demand is so high. I mean we’ve been shipping a lot of product. So the fact that the demand is still high says something about just sort of the product capability that’s been captured by both Microsoft and Sony in this console cycle. We’re continuing to ramp up production. We expect 2022 to be another strong growth year for consoles. If you look at the typical console cycle, the peak year is actually the fourth year typically. And so you would expect maybe 2023 would be the peak year.”

Of course, the aforementioned semiconductor shortage cannot be ignored, and whether or not Sony and Microsoft are able to manufacture enough consoles remains up in the air right now. AMD (and many others) have predicted that 2022 will see continued supply shortages, while Intel has stated that that might even extend into 2023.
