System Shock 2
System Shock was one of the first games to successfully blend role-playing elements within the framework of a first-person shooter, but its sequel System Shock 2 is when the series really came into its own. System Shock 2 is a more refined take on the original, and everything from the storytelling to the exploration and combat is drastically improved in an effort to create a brutal experience through and through. In many ways, System Shock 2 laid the foundations of survival horror games which makes it a worthy candidate to be on this list.
