Doom (1993)
Wolfenstein 3D came first. Doom 2 provided more content and improvements, and Quake popularized free look. However, the original Doom is the catalyst for first-person shooters. At the time, id Software proved that fast-paced shooting action with a level of graphical detail hereto unseen in games was possible and that it could have multiplayer action. Doom spawned numerous imitators and influenced the genre for years to come. The fact that it’s still supported to this day, with total conversions, map packs, and entire campaigns while constantly updated for contemporary platforms, proves that it will live forever.
