God of War (2018)
While staying true to a franchise is key, sometimes you just need to forge ahead with a completely fresh approach. God of War (2018) kicked off a brand new arc in a completely different setting, leaning into Norse mythology while having an older, wiser Kratos and his son, Atreus, in the lead. Despite being more grounded, the combat was still fantastic, providing extensive combo potential and deep mechanics while the exploration and story-telling were top-notch. For all intents and purposes, it was a more mature, refined God of War but one that didn’t forget its roots.
