PS4 Development More Refined, Costs “Not As Scary As Some Believe”

Better tools and efficiency lead to better games rather than higher costs.

Now that the euphoria of the Playstation 4’s reveal is wearing off, real world factors and issues are starting to kick in. One of them focuses on development costs for the next generation of games. Despite Naughty Dog saying costs wouldn’t rise, Epic Games stated that we might see costs double.

Managing director of Guerrilla Games Herman Hulst provided some context to this, stating that, “It’s not as scary as some people led you to believe.”

Take Killzone 1 and 2 whose teams consisted of 125 members each, while Killzone: Shadow Fall for the PS4 currently has 150 people. Surely a far cry from doubled costs.

As of now, it seems that development for the PS4 is less about figuring out how it works and more about working with more efficient tools to maximize performance. Though Hulst is in constant contact system architect Mark Cerny and other developers, it remains to be seen what games will come out of the process.

Stay tuned for E3 2013, we suppose.
