Battlefield-4

After weeks of tantalizing teasers, Battlefield 4 has finally made its debut at GDC. And needless to say, it’s a stunner when it comes to the visual presentation. The Blue tint that was so prominent in Battlefield 3 has been scrapped to make way for destruction on a much larger scale. As we saw from the gameplay footage, environments are more destructible than ever courtesy of the brand new Frostbite 3 engine.

But apart from the destruction carnage, the next thing that comes to mind when we mention Battlefield, is the jaw dropping lighting effects. And Battlefield 4 is in no shortage of them. The lighting is arguably the best we’ve ever seen in a video game, alongside Crysis 3. And this is all possible thanks to Geomerics’ Enlighten engine, which was also incorporated in Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

Their middleware received a major update recently in order to tailor optimize it for the next generation of games. You can check out some demos of theirs over here. The new version focuses heavily on reducing the workloads of artists working on games, while still delivering spectacular results

“With this release, we really focused on simplifying the creation of high-quality lighting for artists working on games across any type of platform,” said Geomerics’ head of development, Dr. Graham Hazel.

We posted a detailed analysis of the Battlefield debut gameplay. What are your thoughts on Battlefield 4? We’ve yet to get a glimpse at what really matters, the multiplayer. Regardless, do you think Battlefield 4 is a major leap forward when it comes to presentation? Let us know below.
